5 SIMPLE STEPS TO FIND YOUR PERSONAL STYLE
If there is something I developed is the talent to finding different ways to style the items I have already in my closet. I learned it when I was younger and couldn’t afford buying new clothes every season but I still wanted to express myself creatively.
I noticed at an early age that if I took a little extra time the night before I could arrange a nice outfit the next morning with the things I already had.
There is no exact formula for finding your personal style but there are some actions you can take to help you get there:
- Declutter and organize your closet.
Decluttering is a very important step. To play with your clothes, you must get rid of what no longer serves you. Having clothes that you love and that work for you in your closet makes playing with them a lot easier and will save you tons of time and money and will stop you from overspending on unnecessary items.
- Start simple.
It is very tempting to buy and wear many trendy items at once but is better to start with one trendy item or accessory and keep the rest simple, as you feel the outfit you can add more items but be aware that you don’t want to look like a Christmas tree.
- Look for inspiration.
Find a friend, a celebrity, or a public person with your similar body type to find inspiration. Notice what you love about their style and find a pattern; maybe you like the way she layers her clothes, or the style of jeans she wears, or her laid back style.
Try to recreate one or two looks and feel them, check how they work for your body and lifestyle. The idea here is to recreate a feeling, don’t worry too much if you don’t nail every single outfit, what you want right now is to find yourself and this takes time. Mastering your style will come later but first you need to practice the skill.
- Play dress-up and be willing to make mistakes
Once you have an idea of what vibe you want to recreate take 30-40 minutes every week to play dress-up with the clothes you have on your closet. Maybe you notice that if you add certain accessories they will work better and you might want to invest on a couple, or maybe a special pair of shoes will really enhance a dress and might be worth it to buy them.
Try to play with texture and colors, for this you might want to check the color prism wheel to see which ones complement each other and work well with your complexion.
- Invest in your personal care.
Invest in your health and take care of your hair, teeth, complexion, and nails. This is an important aspect that is often overlooked. You don’t need to spend thousands at a hair salon; maybe you don’t want to dye your hair, but a good natural treatment will bring it to life. You want to be the best version of yourself and that starts with self-care, which will bring out the beauty in you from within.
After all, clothes are only tools to help you express yourself and feel your best, but at the end of the day you are unique, and the world is eager to see you shine.
